Harmful algal blooms and environmentally friendly control strategies in Japan

چکیده

Abstract The presence and status of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Japan are reviewed, revealing a decrease red tides; however, toxic found to be increasing western Japan. Environmentally friendly control strategies against HABs also compared with integrated agricultural pest management. Very high densities (10 5 –10 8 CFU/g) algicidal growth-inhibiting bacteria were biofilm on seagrass seaweed surfaces surrounding coastal seawater. situation freshwater ecosystems is similar seas for cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa , aquatic plants. These findings offer new insights into the ecology influential algae, suggesting that protection restoration native seagrasses seaweeds marine environments should implemented suppress HABs. Diatom successfully induced bottom sediment perturbation prevent occurrence flagellates such as Chattonella spp. Alexandrium catenella Seto Inland Sea; this method requires robust reproducible verification. “ Sato-Umi ” helpful concept HAB sea when adequately managed by people (e.g., appropriate perturbation; seaweeds, seagrasses, plants; application polycultures fish, etc.).

Models of Harmful Algal Blooms

Models used to study harmful algal blooms are a subset of those used to examine more general planktonic processes. Most models have been heuristic, examining the likelihood of certain processes generating a harmful algal bloom. Several models have been more closely coupled to field data and have been used to gain insights into the dynamics underlying the observations. As better physical and bio...

Harmful Algal Blooms and Public Health.

The five most commonly recognized Harmful Algal Bloom related illnesses include Ciguatera poisoning, Paralytic Shellfish poisoning, Neurotoxin Shellfish poisoning, Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning and Amnesic Shellfish poisoning. Although they are each the product of different toxins, toxin assemblages or HAB precursors these clinical syndromes have much in common. Exposure occurs through the cons...

Molecular tools for monitoring harmful algal blooms.

The world's oceans cover 70 % of the Earth's surface, and their dominant populations, both numerically and biomasswise, belong to microscopic protists and prokaryotes. The marine phytoplanktons are major components of both groups and are, by definition, high dispersal taxa with large population sizes. Small photosynthetic organisms are responsible for the bulk of primary production in oceanic a...

Harmful Algal Blooms and Eutrophication: Nutrient Sources, Composition, and Consequences

Although algal blooms, including those considered toxic or harmful, can be natural phenomena, the nature of the global problem of harmful algal blooms (HABs) has expanded both in extent and its public perception over the last several decades. Of concern, especially for resource managers, is the potential relationship between HABs and the accelerated eutrophication of coastal waters from human a...
